Selena Group and Covestro: A partnership for more sustainable business

Selena Group HQ in Wrocław Poland 2024

One of Selena Group’s key strategic objectives is to become increasingly involved in providing sustainable solutions for the construction industry. The company therefore carefully selects partners who share its commitment to climate neutrality in Europe and the world. Among them is Covestro, a German company that has been supplying Selena with the raw material needed to make polyurethane foams for years. Now its supply will be even greener. This is thanks to a new system that reduces CO2 emissions by up to 70%, developed by Covestro in collaboration with DB Cargo BTT.

The main objective of the collaboration between the Selena Group partners is to achieve a more efficient and sustainable supply chain, primarily involving the transport of diphenylmethylene diisocyanate (MDI). This raw material is a key component of Tytan Professional® brand polyurethane foams, which have been awarded the prestigious International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC) Plus certification. This certification confirms the bio-component content of the products and a 30% reduced carbon footprint, meaning that the entire building construction using the foams is more environmentally friendly.

The new, more sustainable logistics solution proposed by Covestro in cooperation with DB Cargo BTT involves several stages. In the first stage, chemicals produced at Covestro’s plants in Germany will be transported to a rail terminal by dual-fuel (HVO 100) trucks. They are then transported by rail – a mode that reduces CO2 emissions – to a distribution centre in Poland, where they are picked up by biofuel trucks for delivery to customers. It is estimated that this combination of environmentally friendly modes of transport will reduce carbon dioxide emissions by at least 70% compared to conventional road transport.

– At Selena Group, we are constantly working towards more sustainable construction. We closely follow trends and changes in the world around us. We are constantly working to minimise our impact on the environment and to use raw materials rationally. We are therefore delighted to have Covestro and DB Cargo BTT on our side as strong partners who, like us, are committed to reducing emissions and achieving climate neutrality targets – in Europe and globally. – says Michał Specjalski, member of the Selena Group’s Board of Directors responsible for Products and Innovation.
