Joinery is one of the key aspects of any building. It affects the building’s functionality, comfort, safety, aesthetics and energy efficiency. However, proper materials for door and window installation are equally important. Choose them right to ensure the best connection of those elements with other parts of the structure, so you can use the building comfortably for many years. The market offers many different installation products with features that will keep your windows and doors – and consequently the whole building – in top shape.
The fundamental role of window and door joinery is to provide security and privacy for users. Professional installation, using appropriate materials, significantly reduces the risk of possible damage or failure of the joinery. Understandably, doors and windows – as essential parts of the building – also protect the house from adverse weather conditions. Their proper insulation protects interior spaces against water, moisture and wind, preventing the formation of mold and mildew. You should also remember that incorrectly installed windows or doors will directly affect thermal insulation, reducing the energy efficiency of the building. In that case, windows and doors can let as much as 20-30% of heat through, leading to higher heating costs.
To ensure they fulfill their important functions, it is not enough to choose them well – is it also critical to use high-quality materials for their installation. Selena Group’s product range includes Tytan Professional® brand products that will do their job in different conditions.
Sealing and insulation systems for windows
When installing windows, appropriate insulation and sealing are critical to achieving high energy efficiency of buildings, ensuring user comfort and affording protection against adverse weather conditions and outside noise. If you are looking for both high quality and speed of installation, you should opt for comprehensive, system solutions. In order to accommodate these needs, Selena offers TYTAN WINS systems, developed together with WINS: A Standard of Window Sealing and Insulation. This is the first normative and educational document of such type, laying down standards for sealing doors and windows.
The WINS Flex system, recommended for new buildings, includes: flexible foam Tytan Professional WINS Flex, liquid films from this series: internal and external film that prevents the formation of linear thermal bridges at the connection between the window with the wall, as well as an appropriate adhesive – sealant. The films are easy and quick to apply, making the insulation process during installation faster than with the use of tapes. The TYTAN WINS system provides a 20-year warranty for joint tightness and is resistant to UV radiation for up to 10 years. This three-layer window insulation and sealing system is especially recommended for construction joinery, large-size windows and window sets in new buildings, although it can also be used in existing buildings.
TYTAN WINS Flex polyurethane foam is a perfect solution for insulating window and door joinery. It seals and insulates the spaces between the reveal and the frame of windows and doors made of wood, metal or PVC. It is characterized by considerable flexibility, successfully damping vibrations at the interface of the frame and wall. This is a low post-expansion foam, which eliminates the risk of deformation of thin frames or large windows. It provides buildings with effective protection against heat loss. In addition, it is resistant to mold and improves the acoustic insulation of windows.
The features of those films have been designed taking into account the places where they are applied. The outer film is vapor permeable, facilitating the evacuation of any moisture that may appear between the door frame and the wall. It is highly adhesive, flexible and resistant to harmful weather conditions such as UV radiation, acid rain or strong wind. The film used on the interior side has the properties of a vapor-permeable barrier that prevents moisture from penetrating between the frame and the wall. Otherwise the insulating properties of the foam might be reduced.
The WINS Flex system is mainly used for windows and doors installed for the first time in new buildings. For window and door replacements, a similar WINS Fix system has been designed that uses foam expansion tape on the outside instead of film. The tape expands and completely fills the gap between the jamb and the door frame, removing moisture from the wall. Soaked with water repellent impregnation agent, it does not absorb water and ensures full tightness of the joint. It should be emphasized that this system is also designed for the replacement and renovation of windows in historic buildings. It can be easily applied to seal windows in walls with a jamb without interfering with the outer layer of the façade.
Stable door installation
Like in the case of windows, stable installation of interior and exterior doors is crucial for safety, durability, thermal and acoustic insulation, aesthetics and comfortable use of the building. Installing an interior door consists of several steps. The key one is to fit the door frame in the opening and ensure it is plumb and level. Next, the structure should be carefully sealed.
When planning both the installation and filling of gaps, consider Tytan Professional LOW-EX GREEN foam. This is a low-pressure foam that will not cause deformation of the door frame. It has a high yield of up to 60 liters. On top of that, it does not emit harmful gases during application and curing. Its high sound insulation properties and very good cell density should also be noted. What makes its composition unique is BIOSELENOLS®, a proprietary feedstock derived from renewable sources. BIOSELENOLS is a 100% bio-based polyester, developed by Selena’s R&D department for one-component foam (OCF) products. It responds to the challenges related to the decarbonization of the construction industry by 2050.
Installing and insulating windows and doors using the right materials is key to the performance of any building. Their correct, tight installation and thermal and acoustic insulation provide users not only with comfort and safety, but also contribute to energy savings and operating cost reductions. Choosing high-quality installation materials has a real impact on the durability and energy efficiency of buildings, which responds to the expectations of developers and users.
