Selena Group, a global producer and distributor of construction chemicals, has signed a conditional agreement to purchase shares in the Portuguese company Imperalum, as it plans to expand its proposition of bituminous membranes (commonly known as roofing felt). The agreement provides for the acquisition of 90.1% of the company shares giving control over 100% of capital and voting rights. The acquisition of Imperalum is in line with Selena’s international expansion strategy.
Imperalum is a manufacturer of APP membranes made using bitumen modified with atactic polypropylene, which gives it a high softening point. Plastomeric roofing membranes ensure high stability of the surface and can be applied on roofs with different pitches, even on vertical surfaces. Established in 1968, today Imperalum has a significant share of the Portuguese bituminous membrane market. The acquisition is intended to complement Selena Group’s range of roofing felt and liquid waterproofing products and strengthen its Waterproofing division in Western Europe. The deal is conditional on the approval of the Portuguese anti-trust authority.
“Selena Group’s most recent transaction means strengthening our position in Western markets while ensuring development of our production capacity. Imperalum is a well known brand in the Portuguese market. Crucially, the company has its own factory near Lisbon and for decades has been a benchmark for contractors in terms of specifications of bituminous waterproofing solutions. These elements are highly important for us from a strategic perspective – in order to develop, we need to increase our access to individual markets, and also have a strong base in the form of production facilities and technological expertise,” says Sławomir Majchrowski, CEO of Selena Group.
The acquisition of the company, which has extensive experience in developing technically advanced waterproofing solutions, will add to the offering of Matizol, a roof covering brand owned by Selena Group since 2010. By acquiring Imperalum, Selena will strengthen its foothold in the waterproofing segment and in other product groups in Portugal. In addition to roofing membranes, Imperalum also makes bituminous emulsions and sells acoustic and thermal isolation products, and other products adapted to the requirements of the local market. The company’s solutions are used on numerous facilities in Portugal and Spain: on football stadiums, shopping centers, megastores, bridges, airports and other public buildings.
